Trance Dance
Healing Movement

Trance dance is spontaneity in the purest sense.
Here is wild abandon,
freedom of spirit,
ancient healing.
(excerpt from "Bellydance Improvisation" by Avena)

Trance Dance from Wendy Buonaventura's book, There are healing mechanisms throughout your body that work best when you get your 'juices' flowing. The circulation, lymphatics, and digestion are moving systems. Your emotions are dancers moving and motivating you all the time. Mental thoughts swirl constantly in our brains.

When you dance for healing, you massage your organ systems and sweat. You release tension from your body. You can rest and sleep better. You get in touch with what you need.

"When you set the body in motion, it can heal itself..." Gabrielle Roth

Getting in touch with your body allows you to have a heightened awareness of your health ~ especially when something is amiss. You can respond to illness sooner, and have time to choose your approach to remedy it.

Disease - Cause and Effect

Most dis-ease in the body is a result of many factors. There are spiritual, emotional, and mental reasons why we get sick or injured. Dance invokes the mystery of spirit. It navigates through emotion, and allows healthy expression of feelings. It alleviates mental stress.

A "dancing" lifestyle, coupled with a practice of reflection (meditation, counseling, journaling, etc.), gives you a way to put in motion whatever ails you and get it moving out of your life.

The Global Tradition of Healing Dance

Every culture worldwide has a practice of trance dance for healing the mind and body. For the Navajo, there is the Fire Dance and Grass Dance. In Bali, there is the Masked Dance. In fact, there is Shamanic Dance practices in many First Nations cultures from Siberia to India.

Cultures who are well-known for their trance dance are the Yoruba of western Africa, the Shamans of Siberia, the Vodun of Haiti, the Shango of Trinidad, the Salish and Inuit of Canada, the Santeria of Cuba, the Sami of Scandinavia, Huichol of Mexico and the Umbanda of Brazil.

Of particular note here, because they are born from the Middle East, where (until recently) bellydance was thriving are the Guedra of Morocco, the Sufi Dervishes and the Zar.

What You Can Expect

Trance dance is very liberating. You can expect to feel lighter, healthier and more vibrant than ever before. Mental clarity, freedom of motion and emotional balance are the results you can expect.

However, you may temporarily experience some discomfort. Intense activity that brings on the sweat (such as trance), frees up toxins stored in tissues, organs and bones. As the circulatory and digestive systems carry 'bad' stuff out and away, you may feel somewhat ill.

Also, emotions that you have been suppressing may also come to the surface. You may find yourself feeling agitated or sensitive.

Incorporating some extra comfort and support measures to ease the process of healing will aid your body, mind and spirit. For "Mind-Body Therapy" to ease the healing process, click here.
